SpaceX’s Starship rocket ‘lost’ during re-entry
The launch appeared flawless as all 33 engines at the base of the booster ignited, propelling the vehicle to its planned staging point where the Ship detached and continued its journey into space.
Today’s launch, known as Integrated Flight Test-3 (IFT-3), marked the third test mission for the fully assembled Starship. The initial and subsequent Starship launches in the previous year concluded dramatically, with the vehicles exploding before fulfilling their mission objectives. Nevertheless, the data gathered from these initial flights aided SpaceX engineers in preparing Starship for future success.
The Ship completed its powered ascent, with engines shutting down as scheduled. Everything seemed to be going according to plan as the Ship coasted around the Earth.

As the rocket hurtles through the atmosphere at high speeds during re-entry, it encounters resistance from the air. The South Padre crowd erupted in cheers as the dim morning sky lit up with the ignition of Starship’s 33 first-stage Raptor engines, enveloping almost the entire vehicle in dust and smoke. Within seconds, the 400-foot tall (122 meters) rocket emerged from the plume, rapidly ascending into the sky.
The pictures at re-entry were spectacular; you could see the super-heated gases enveloping the Ship. You could see the vehicle moving its flaps to try to control the descent.
